The tradition teaches that St Martha, coming from Palestine, landed at Tarascon and fought the Tarasque, a terrible monster who lived in the Rhone. The Collegiate Royal St Martha, one of the most beautiful churches in Provence, is built in her honor near the castle of King Rene, count of Provence and Duke of Anjou.

Tarascon castle is exceptionally well preserved. It is one of the most beautiful medieval castles in France. This palace started in 1400 by Louis II of Anjou and completed by his son King Rene, has a majestic feudal appearance.

Tarascon inspired other tales, especially the famous story of Tartarin de Tarascon, illustrious person born under the pen of Alphonse Daudet in 1872.
